When it comes to Winter boots, there are a few characteristics people tend to look for: soles with traction, insulated lining, and a waterproof upper. But did you know that having enough space for your toes can also help you stay warm in cold weather?
Wearing tight footwear can restrict blood flow, and good circulation is essential for staying warm. On top of that, having extra space in your boots creates air pockets, and trapped air is an excellent insulator against the cold. For this reason, boots with a wide toe box will retain more heat than restrictive footwear will.
Your choice of socks also plays a big role in the warmth of your feet. Socks that are too tight have the same problems as above, and certain fabrics also function differently. Fuzzy fibers such as wool trap heat and will keep you much warmer than smooth fabrics like cotton. A solid choice would be to wear anatomically-shaped socks made of wool. “Toe socks” won’t be as warm because your toes can’t share heat as easily, in the same way mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves do.
Not everyone necessarily needs heavy duty boots that are specifically marketed for Winter use. Depending on the climate you live in, you might be just fine following the tips I’ve mentioned. You can find a list of everyday wide toe box boots here, but if you’re looking for something with additional cold weather features, check out the options below.
(I’m personally not a fan of wearing thin-soled barefoot boots in Winter, as I can feel the cold underfoot in freezing weather and they’re often lacking in traction, but I’ve included a few options for those who might want them.)
